And generally, considering that most low-end Cisco routers (even 
the 7200-VXR's) are software routers (don't do any packet 
processing in h/w), with all the features at your disposal, the 
price is worth it when considering replicating the same on a PC.

But then again, all the other differences stand. I think what 
would work best is to know what features you need, what it will 
take you to deploy them, how much traffic you will handle, the 
load you expect to give your routing protocols, Layer 1 link 
types you wish to terminate, how many pps you think you will 
need, e.t.c.

In most cases, you might find a case for a PC based solution if 
these figures are on the low-end, but if not, you probably need 
a dedicated solution.
