Some of my colleagues run VMWare Fusion and Parallels with 1GB of RAM, and have no complaints. Heck, many of them run Windows, Linux or FreeBSD has virtual machines on their MacBook laptops. Personally, Parallels didn't do it for me. With 2GB of memory, I have no complaints at all. I can burn a dual-layer 9 DVD, download and install Mac OS X Updates, check e-mail and watch the latest episode of House, all at the same time. It's really quite neat. > but why not simplify stuff - import your maildir mail to > a mozilla variant (thunderbird, netscape or seamonkey), > and 'roam' with your platform independent profile > whenever you change computers and OSes? Because Thunderbird and them will not support Maildir. I spent 2 weeks trying to convince myself Thunderbird would work, but having to lose e-mail because the application thought my 2GB Inbox was corrupted, figuring it was "too large", didn't go very far to this end. The workaround was to disable mail filters (and I have dozens of folders), which wasn't going to fly. For my requirements, I'd never touch Thunderbird. I lost a few hundred new messages because the filters on my 2GB plus Inbox simply crashed the application, and > /dev/null'ed the mail that was being downloaded at the time. Cheers, Mark.
