I have not been able to replicate this bug 100%. It affects some installations, and it doesn't others. Two of my colleagues experience this, while others do not. Thunderbird 1.5 (the older one) was generally more stable, especially if you enabled "funkier" themes. But none of the workaround fixes worked for me (neither did compacting of a mailbox).
