Not if you cooperate with people that just open a document and start typing. 
Have exchanged docs rather often, and even used the annotations 
functionality. No Prob.

Yes, if people get creative with formatting, you might have issues. But mostly 
i keep the formatting for last anyways. And only distribute final documents 
in .pdf. (Where was that option in M$ Word again?)

Same for presentations, i use PDFs as well.

And if you really have problems, we persuade the partner to switch, too. It 
makes them happy, once they did.
