I managed to resolve my issue and had actually mis-diagonised it. I had
previously tweaked my xorg.cong file to use two monitors and seems after the
upgrade the login prompt moved to the second monitor not the default one
which is why it looked like I could not login.

So reset it back to use one monitor for now.
