Thanks,
I managed to resolve my issue and had actually mis-diagonised it. I
had previously tweaked my xorg.cong file to use two monitors and seems
after the upgrade the login prompt moved to the second monitor not the
default one which is why it looked like I could not login.
So reset it back to use one monitor for now.

I have also realized that at the login screen (GUI),
1. user (user) fails to login but does in the terminal
2. jmuyimba (administrator) logs in with any passwd (am
wondering why)
3. m4duser (administrator) logs in at the terminal
I suggest you purge and re-install gdm.
$ sudo apt-get install gdm --reinstall --purge

I haven't succeeded. He suggested that I purge and re-install gdm.
using....
$ sudo apt-get install gdm --reinstall --purge
But any attempt to supply any passwd from any user has failed to
execute the above line.
Am anxiously waiting for solutions.

I resolved mine as well.
I had to do a fresh reinstallation and am glad it wasn't as hectic as i
had anticipated.
Thanks Hari, your advice helped.
