Reading through the raspberrypi site now but it doesn't seem to be a media player, more a low cost PC. Am I wrong?
Popcorn Hour (http://www.popcornhour.com) makes a great full 1080p Linux-based media player. Like all Linux-based devices it has some quirks in the buy-it-and-start-using-it-immediately department, but with a little configuring my Linux-unfriendly wife uses it to play music, view photos, watch movies with zero problems. Her only problems come when I get bored and start trying to install unnecessary stuff like python & tinyproxy! P. Other options are the Boxee Box from D-Link and Roku's many media player options. -- Evolution (n): A hypothetical process whereby infinitely improbable events occur with alarming frequency, order arises from chaos, and no one is given credit.
