You said "hanging", so by definition that means the button wouldn't be touching the lute. Another approach is to use a saxophone strap or classical guitar strap instead of a loop attached to a button, then you could wear a buttonless shirt. Now as far as the twine which is stretched between the two pegs goes, if that chafs the finish of the middle rib, I don't know. I experimented with this 25 years ago but only for a short time. It felt very odd to me to have just one point of support. I use a standard guitar strap configuration, that is both ends attached to the back of the lute, NOT one end going to the pegbox.
