I am not so sure. You are saying one-glyph one element in the kernel.
Then we need the full unicode machinery in the kernel and not just in
the frontends. (think arabic and ligatures, you are in for a rough
ride.)
IMHO the kernel should _only_ concern itself with codepoints, not
glyphs.
