I do not have a solid scenario to say your solution is wrong, but it
sounds like you are naming files by their contents. In the tex world,
we insert files by names and if we insert image1 and image2, we are
inserting two different files even if their contents are identical
now. When image2 is changed, it is expected that image1 stays intact.

Unless you are md5'ing file names, not the contents...
