Aside from getting everything set up, a good advice which worked for me is to start with things simple to fix that annoy you personally, which is a good way to know the code. You can find a list of ideas on the bug tracker: <http://www.lyx.org/trac/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&keywords=~easyfix&col=id&col=summary&col=keywords&col=type&col=reporter&desc=1&order=id>, though you seem to have your own ideas. Once you get more familiar with the code it gets easier to think of bigger projects.
