Mind, that all icons in the toolbar work without external converter.

The to-be-converted image is in spash.lyx. It may be a better to remove
it from the document (unless the required converter can be bundled with
LyX).

No, on Windows and Mac the "Examples" and "Templates" buttons are missing.

The lyx directories are shown with Help>About LyX.
This should be documented in Tutorial 2.1 along with the suggestion to open
examples/lyx_raw.lyx.
