'Character layout' that was used to
  a) display the stuff in red and
  b) to prepend a backslash when exporting to LaTeX.

I think this could be realized by an extra inset (maybe it even should - I
have not thought about it yet).

Otoh I did not really expect to get Flak from this side...

Would it be too hard to leave the tex-mode stuff in mathed until I made my
mind up? I don't know what it did in the outside world, but I live under
the impression that mathed's 'tex-mode' does not really interfere with ERT
outside math...
