Yes I agree, I'm not telling you what's the best way of using LyX. LyX is
(or should be) flexible enough to let the user choose.
I only commented to Angus objections to the need of processing ALL doc pages,
when only a few are requested for printing.
Angus objections are not correct, I think, for two reasons:
1) As I said, if you have 1000 pages as a whole document in LyX,
you should take it for granted that at times all those pages
need to be processed for creating the proper output.
2) Even if you select a sub range of pages for output, the whole
document needs to be processed, for obvious reasons (your selected
page for printing may have references to pages all over the document!).
So if we would embrace an external printing program (e.g. xpp, qtcups etc.)
we may have to produce a ps file of the whole document first, before giving
it to xpp/qtcups for printing; but that should not discredit xpp/qtcups,
since processing the whole document may be needed anyway.
