There are plans to extend character styles in LyX 1.1. This is indeed
something that we need to do.

Note that you can access typewriter font with M-c p. If we had an
icon, we could also add support for it on the toolbar. I agree
however, that it would not be a correct logical style, and that we
need such logical styles...
