Thanks for the reply Jean-Marc!  I don't think I installed twice, but it's
been quite a while since I did this.  I could have committed many blunders
for my understanding of compiling is limited.  I only just discovered the
seeming duplication while studying the program.

At the time I unzipped lyx-1.0.0pre2, I believe I  remember having a
choice of the directory for this this.  I think I chose this long
directory name in order to distinguish it from the already installed lyx
which was at /usr/local/lyx.  Sometimes compiling doesn't go well, and my
previous version was working ok.  So I imagined that by specifying a
different directory I  could save the old, in case something went wrong
with the new.  But the compile went very smoothly.

I no longer have the older lyx and the newer one definitely looks for the
supporting files at /usr/local/share/lyx, for I have tested this.

I have not tried specifying an environmental variable for the supporting
files to see if this would work.  

My lyx executable is at /usr/local/bin.
