Excellent idea, it could even be broken down to give the work count in
respective sections/chapters/abstract/appendices?.

Anecdote
--------
Yesterday on our user support line I had a user wondering why Word 98 (for
Mac) could not save as Word 97 (for PC). She thought this odd because she
imagined Word document formats were some sort of standard. I spent a good
deal of time explaining that Word and Microsoft and standards do got go
together. I explained to her there was a better way but because she was a
a particular type of MacUser I did not explain what it was because it
would have fried her brain! (Disclaimer: Some MacUsers are sensible - they
run Linux!)
Rhetorical Question
-------------------
Why do academics use word? It is crap for scientific writing. It does not
support references correctly and documents fall apart when exchanged
between different architectures?
Thanks to the LyX team for a great product.
