As I know, LaTeX supports only PostScript (PS) pictures (.ps files). When one use LyX to preview the document with alien picture formats, LyX converts pictures to PS, then LyX->LaTeX, then LaTeX->dvi, pdf, etc. The right way is to use only PS-pictures, they will be embedded into dvi or pdf.
