In case it's useful, I have one m100 where the display was flickering and
wouldn't go all the way dark, and I fixed it by spraying the contrast pot
with deoxit d5. It took a solid couple weeks for it to fully dry out and
work right again. During that time it was super faint and even totally
blank for several days. But after it finally did dry out it's been perfect
since then.

But the rest of the machine wasn't crashing so you might be on to something
with the caps in your case. I pretty much knew it was the pot because you
can sort of see the visual version of a scratchy volume knob.
