If that doesn't work, you can try Sarah's suggestion of booting to
the recovery partition. This is a hidden partition that Apple now
places on your hard drive that works as a replacement for the
startup DVD. You can boot into the Recovery partition by holding
down the Command+r keys immediately after powering up and hearing
the chime. Keep holding them down for a while, until a window with
"OS X Utilities" appears (since you have sighted assistance).
You have options to restore from Time Machine backup, Reinstall OS
