I am re-reading what you say here John, now it is a 1TB drive and so far
nothing else on it but it would seem a bit wasteful to use a 1TB drive
simply for back-up purposes. I am wondering if I shoudld partition the
drive in that case. Alternatively I do have a 125GB drive and wonder is
this too small to back up my hard drive if that drive is 128GB. I would not
have 128GB of data on my Mac but it might be best to use this external drive
instead rather than the large one.

Subject: Re: Backing-Up To External Hard Drive
When you plug the external drive into your Mac, you should be prompted
if you want to use it as a Time Machine backup. Remember that Time
Machine erases all data from a partition, so if you have data on the
drive, be aware of that fact.
If Time Machine doesn't come up, go into System Preferences and
choose, Time Machine. You will then select, Change Disk, and pick your
external drive from the table. Once you do this, navigate to, Choose
disk, and the process should begin shortly after that.

step how to do this? For instance, do I have to highlight the external
hard drive first before going in to time machine, etc.
