Remember that Time Machine backs up your system on a schedule. If you are
only going to plug in the drive 4 times a year, that's fine, but that's
probably not wise. I'd do it a lot more than that and reserve a partition for
back ups.
I believe on my website in the, How To for Mac OS X, pages, have an
explanation someone wrote in how to partition a drive. It's actually not that
difficult, but you can contact me off list if you need a hand.
