Do I take it that purchasing a DSL modem in Canda, is still too
new a phenomenon for reviews?

DSL modems and cable modems are usually supplied by the ISP and this means that there is a limited market for them.
Sympatico supplies SpeedStream DSL modems and upgrades them all at the same time.
If an ISP will only supply one type of unit to all of their customers then they only have to train their support people on how to set-up and trouble-shoot one piece of equipment.

I agree with you completely about Sympatico, but the point of this exercise is to find an ISP that meets my needs, and not one where I need to fit neatly into theirs. Sympatico is a fine service. I'm not complaining. However, they don't allow static IPs and they insist on a rental plan, which is how they offer the service, which I suspect would suit most people. My needs are different. Heh. I might still have to pay more for the service I want, notwithstanding any savings offset by owning the modem. But which modem?

thx,
