I agree with Christian, looking at the xDSL situation from the other end of the line (we design and build Broadband Loop Carriers for the majority of the RBOCs/ILECs/CLECs in Canada, the US and abroad): we do a lot of interoperability testing with each of the available xDSL modems and see a lot of un-documented 'features' (sensitivity to line impairments, on/off-hook, losing sync, frequent re-training, you name it). In a sense, it is similar to what happened with V.92 when it came out: there is the standard, and there is reality, and not always do they correlate 100% (each implementation may and will be different). You need to get from your ISP/phone company the list of xDSL modems they are comfortable with (and they do have their preferred supplier), and go from there.
I bypassed the V.92 modems completely - 28.8 to DSL. :)
Is it a safe bet (or a foolish assumption) that SpeedStream modems should be very compatible with the smaller ISPs too, since SpeedStreams are being used by Ma Bell (Sympatico)?
