I've installed 95B over 95a. You can then get Powerquest Partition Magic to convert the drive to FAT32 or see my response to your next question. > Can I boot from the 95b cd, make the partition, copy > the contents from > the old drive and then update the 95a to 95b by > running setup so when > booted from the hdd win 95 will boot on a > 2gb > partition? You can install 95b over 95a on the existing drive, create an emergency boot disk during install. When done, go to c:\windows\command and copy fdisk.exe and sys.com to that floppy. Now install the new drive as a master in place of the old drive. Use the 95B boot disk then FDISK and format the new drive as FAT32. Make sure that the primary partition is set to Active when you view the partition information in FDISK. Either use the /s switch when you format c: /s or format then sys c: to put the basic boot files on the new drive. Next, reinstall the original drive as Master and the new drive as Slave. In the System control panel, go to the Performance tab and if I remember right, click Advanced so you can move the swap file to the root of c: When you apply this change you'll have to reboot. After it's rebooted, open Windows Explorer then click Tools > Folder Options > View then set things to NOT hide anything. Apply that then click on C: Click in the rignt pane and hit Control A on the keyboard to select all. Almost done here! Hold Control and click WIN386.SWP IO.SYS COMMAND.COM and DRVSPACE.BIN to deselect them. You MUST keep MSDOS.SYS selected! Click and hold with the right button and drag all the selected files to the new drive then release and click Copy. Sit back and go have lunch if it's a slow PC. ;) WIN386.SWP is a locked, open file which Windows won't let you copy. IO.SYS has to be put on a disk with either sys.com or the /s switch in format. COMMAND.COM is also put on by sys or /s so there's no need to copy it, same for DRVSPACE.BIN. MSDOS.SYS is no longer required to begin at a specific starting sector to be loaded by IO.SYS. Since Windows 95, that file is simply a text file with System, Hidden and Read Only attributes set. Microsoft finally got a clue and reprogrammed IO.SYS to look for MSDOS.SYS by name instead of the sector it should be in. The basic version is changed during Windows' install so the system knows where to find Windows and set some settings. Now that all the files are copied, swap the drive cables and master/slave settings. Unless you're in Los Angeles County. Then you swap Initiator and Receiver or whatever PC BS words they decided to use. ;) If all is well, the box will boot from the new drive and you'll have more room to roam. Once you've verified everything is working, you can FDISK and format the old drive to FAT32. And finally, if you have a look around the web, there is a way to hack any version of OSR2 to not require a CD Key to install. Hmmm, I can't remember, but part of this hack may also be what enabled OSR2 to upgrade over 95a. Chack back with me if it says it can't upgrade. :) I haven't done a 95 any version install in quite a while! ===== It's total Fandemonium! http://www.fandemonium.org __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
