Are you sure you have the jumper settings on the hard drive set properly? If you have the incorrect jumper settings, or have it set on master when it's really slave (or vice versa) it will sometimes report only a portion of the hard drive, the rest being inaccessible. I had a 45GB hard drive report only 2GB because of this once.
If you have Win 95 OSR 2.5 you can use Fat 32 and use a single partition if you wish, but if you have Win 98 you might as well go with that. You can use FDISK on another machine to format it, that shouldn't be a problem. If you can find a floppy disk though it would really help if you make yourself a boot-disk though. Hope this helps.
