I - like many people here no doubt - am using OSX and a fairly modern

is the case. I am using a HP Laserjet 1300n printer, which is still being
manufactured. Yet I have to use gimp. The beauty of OSX for many is that it
requires little technical knowledge, however when you start having to use
Gimp, that kind of negates this advantage. Is it simply because Apple does
not support many modern printers?

No, but not all printer drivers are installed by default. You can select which are under 'customize' during installation. If the manufacturer provides a driver for OS X it should be supplied with the printer or available from their website.
