I had tried some of the basics, like switching off and on and checking the cables, so went on to delete it entirely from the list of printers. It is an old Epson Stylus Colour 740. I then reconnected the G5 iMac to the G3 iMac via the network and re-selected the printer, which then successfully printed a web page. :)

Thoughts - from basic to advanced:
Powering printer 'off' and 'on'? Cable connections? Going into the print/fax pane in System Preferences and uninstalling and then re-selecting? Which model/brand is it? Has the software updater been run lately? Not impossible that your OS version has been rev'd upwards and left the printer drivers behind, so to speak. In which case, check manufacturer's web site for further info. Go into the Library and manually trash anything related to the printer then do a clean install? Is there another Mac to test the printer with?
