Hi Chris. I am not sure the blame for this problem lies with Apple. Indeed they do supply drivers for a range of current printers with the OS and I believe they have a wider range available as an add on if required. For most consumer printers there should be a driver available, even a generic one, without needing to get involved in the complex set ups we have been discussing, which relate to network printing with a large format printer which is no longer being made. That said, many people would probably argue that GIMP offers scope to improve on the driver you may get as standard.

My experience of HP is that their tangible (as opposed to professed) support for Apple is indifferent and I had them come and take away their large format printer which I bought on the strength of the professed support. The only way I could get it to work was using an independent company's RIP software which cost too much money and did not work. That HP should rely on poor overpriced third party drivers to make their machines work demonstrates to me an unwillingness to invest in the right areas. They may argue that most of their large format sales go to people using pro RIP hardware or software anyway but I felt that dealing with HP was a bit like dealing with BT: a huge organsation which is happy to bombard you with expensive unsolicited advertising but has not a clue about investing in the product or managing the required support.

Having said that, I do use HP for some smaller printers and have to say that for colour printing of photographs they are very impressive for such cheap machines.

Hi all, following with interest the discussion of Gimp printing, and have a
general question.
I - like many people here no doubt - am using OSX and a fairly modern
printer, but having to rely on Gimp printing. Can someone explain why this
is the case. I am using a HP Laserjet 1300n printer, which is still being
manufactured. Yet I have to use gimp. The beauty of OSX for many is that it
requires little technical knowledge, however when you start having to use
Gimp, that kind of negates this advantage. Is it simply because Apple does
not support many modern printers? Should I switch to a different brand
printer? I really have never understood why m printer is not supported.
Thanks in advance. Chris
