Under MacOS 9.x, that was most definitely the case. e.g. an iMac
specific installer could not be used on anything but the iMac.
However, there was at least one exception and was for the Cube.

As regards OSX, I've never tried - however someone did tell me
recently that the eMac install disk from work would not do the
business on their home iMac.
