Hi Walter.
I have a PowerBook connected to a Netgear DG834G via ethernet cable at the moment as it is dual(cable or WiFi).
I used this route, as you do not need to use a driver which is the norm' with a USB modem.
The DG834G comes with firewall which is great no need to purchase additional software (as if ones needs to with OS X).
I use broadband package from Virgin at 17.99 limited to 3 Gb per month. I chose it for a few reasons: a) I have been with them
as dial up for some time and my email addresses would be the same. b) There is no connection charge. c) No contract only to
give them 30 days advance notice of cancellation. There is one good thing at the moment. When I asked regarding a means to
monitor ones usage via there web site, I was informed they had not set this up and until they do no one would be charge any extra
for going over their usage. They also do a cheap modem (unfortunately USB) it was around 9.99.
I hope this is useful

I'm thinking of joining up BT broadband, as a first port of call. I think BT gives you a free USB modem which is of little use for Macs (in fact they say it's not compatible).
