Now you mention it, maybe my Finder freezes could have been caused by the
original installation - this was a late G3 iBook that came with Jaguar +
Panther update. I had to do one archive and install straight after the
first install to fix various issues. 

Hopefully the combo updates have sorted it - I really, really don't want
to go through that Jaguar + Panther install again. It took ages and who
knows, I could end up in an even worse state if I went for it again.
