Hi Fellow Geeks
Trev here 1st time to post - 18 years in a Uni Systems Development environment in Belfast.
I run a powerBook with OS X native - you want to keep it clean of OS 9 (heck, that was 4 years ago).
Install OS 9.2.2 on an external Firewire box and dual-boot at will between the 2. You mention your friend on the PC list -- even he can't emulate 98 within XP -- he'd have to dual-boot the PC from one or tother flavor.
There is no comparison between IE on 9 and IE on X, and indeed IE on X is an historic piece of !! I take it you're aware that M$soft have publicly announced they are no longer developing IE for the Mac. Firefox or Opera is the way to go to keep abreast of the WinTel Java - EasyJet recently updated their Java base and even Safari with Java 1.4.1 rendered the site useless. Java 1.4.2 fixed it but not everybody using a Mac (even more PC) is up to speed on the current flavor of the coffee. It either works to a user or it doesn't -- and if it doesn't you hear about it.
The big problem here is that the MacMini came working out of the box with 1 partition, hence the external FireWire drive for OS 9. Alternatively use Carbon Copy Cloner to shift the Mini to a fireWire box, create 2 partitions on the Mini, clone the OS X back from the FireWire box and fresh install OS 9 in the 2nd partition.
Hope that helps.

Question 1 - are there any issues installing MacOS 9 running in 'classic mode' on the new box? I would assume this is not a problem but thought I should do due diligence on his behalf.
I've not done it, but it comes with an OS9 install disc, so I would imagine it's
fully supported.
Thanks for that. When I set up a G5 iMac recently, I didn't see a MacOS 9 disk with the kit. Maybe I blinked ...
Question 2 - is this even necessary? Is the MacOSX version of IE a
straight port of Classic's IE 5.1.7? In other words, do both versions
render web pages in an identical fashion? Specifically thinking of CSS
issues.
We have to dual boot between 0S9 and X on our test machine, because there are
enough differences between the two, e.g. the Javascript engine, XDOM support,
etc. to make it worth doing so.
Thanks again Marcus - You say dual boot - so do I take it you cannot rely on 'Classic' for full compatibility testing?
I'd like to avoid having to tell this guy to buy a second hand Mac - particularly as his buying a MacMini and being a happy camper will have a ripple effect. He's a major opinion leader on that PC platform dominated list.
