Hi Trev, welcome to the list. > I run a powerBook with OS X native - you want to keep it clean of OS 9 > (heck, that was 4 years ago). Feel the same way but the industry seems to be very slow to migrate (no doubt due to costs and bugs), hence the amount of 9 interest and compatibility concerns out there... > There is no comparison between IE on 9 and IE on X, and indeed IE on X > is an historic piece of !! I take it you're aware that M$soft have > publicly announced they are no longer developing IE for the Mac. To each their own...I tend to use a mixture of three browsers myself (IE for the sites that seem to not work with the other browsers or if I wish to save the page for offline viewing, Safari for my main surfing (anyone know how to save a page for offline viewing? I can't seem to do this properly in Safari), and firefox just to stay current on what is new as well as the fact that I use this in my enforced Windell work world). I am not sure about the dropping of IE development for Mac for the future (after Firefox started to drop IE numbers to below 95 percent MS quickly changed their tune about releasing a new Win version...time will tell if they really do drop development for the Mac IE altogether...especially if market share continues to drop here as well). > Firefox or Opera is the way to go to keep abreast of the WinTel Java - > EasyJet recently updated their Java base and even Safari with Java > 1.4.1 rendered the site useless. It either works to a user or it doesn't -- and if it doesn't > you hear about it. Not sure if that is always true, as I don't tend to tell webmasters if their site doesn't work...I try my few different browsers and if none of them work I go elsewhere (and take my business with me, call me a basta*d if you will)...Not being a web designer myself, I have always wondered whether people bother to check compatibility and code extensively or if they just bang it out in some ridiculous *standard* (thinking MS world here with IE 6.x and Frontpage <no comment!>)...or even just using one browser and the newer programs such as Go Live or Dreamweaver? Do people check code for mistakes or even still write html by hand? (The amount of sites around with frames still makes me think that entirely too little thought is given to web presence)... > The big problem here is that the MacMini came working out of the box > with 1 partition, hence the external FireWire drive for OS 9. > Alternatively use Carbon Copy Cloner to shift the Mini to a fireWire > box, create 2 partitions on the Mini, clone the OS X back from the > FireWire box and fresh install OS 9 in the 2nd partition. 9 on an external drive should work fine to allow dual booting still? (can't confirm this myself) but trying to format the disk and installing 9 on a second (or further) partition seems likely to fail with the wish for 9 to go away and die from the side of Apple...
