I'll soon, well in the New Year, be buying an iMac and am considering getting Office Pro that comes with Virtual PC.

The reason I'm considering this is that I have a number of bits n bobs that are PC only and currently I use my work PC, e.g. my Sony Minidisc (yes I know I should get an iPod:-) and also my mobile phone's docking station.

So, the question is if any one would recommend Virtual PC for such tasks and if they've had any experience of using Virtual PC to then run the bits of software I've mentioned?

I wouldn't recommend using VPC for connecting things like a mobile phone. I have tried on quite a few occasions to dock my Palm Treo 600 via VPC, and basically given up. Although VPC wil recognize that a new USB Palm device has connected it refuses to sync it. Googling reveals that I am not alone in having this problem, and I have not seen of anyone who has solved the problem. My solution is to sync it with iCal and Address Book on the Mac -- much easier!

As for Office, I have both Office 2004 for Mac and also PC Office Pro 2003 (or whatever it's called) which I run under Virtual PC (I get them cheap from MS!). The Mac version is much more usable on a Mac, and the only decent reason for having the Windows version is to have Access; and the ghastly Publisher and Front Page, so that I can read files that people send me.

The other question, sorry - taking advantage, is that I already have an old copy of Office and was wondering if the £390+ price tag for Office Professional could not be better spent on a cheap as chips PC laptop already with Windows XP?

If you plan to use Windows anything other than occasionally, or if you deped on software or hardware that only runs with a PC then this is your best bet. Otherwisae, if you have a fast Mac, then you may get away with Virtual PC.
