Hi James, Guy, Lars and all the other PPC users out there James Greenidge schrieb: > It should be announced right now from the get-go to nip any rumors in > the bud whether OOo will abandon PPC within the next two years in order > to give school boards and corporations a heads-up on future purchasing > commitments -- or shift to MS Office.
+1. We are involved as a part of commercial projects and/or decisions so users need reasonable degrees of certainty of what to expect. > I can tell you right now... > ...Remember, compassionate Billie is Watching. > I'm not so sure you will get a recent version of MS Office running on those Macs (...and preferably using 10.3?) in satisfactory way. Same as trying to get Vista running on a tree years old Windows machine :-) Most of the discussion seems to me more to refer to the (assumed) proposal to remove all PPC-Versions (including recent 2.3) immediately from the servers and not about OOo 3.0 perhaps not running on a PPC under 10.3. And what will be about Mac OS 10.4 support in a year or so when Mac OS 10.6 comes along? You use OOo 2.3 on you PPC Systems in you school or wherever? Great. And you probably will do so in a year or even in five years (or as long as those machines are up and going) - The software will not disappear from your machines when a new OOo-Version is published. What's wrong with that? You can not expect to have "bleeding edge"-Software running forever on old Hardware/OS. Maybe you do a change to Linux perhaps? Or even better: Make/buy the necessary porting work by yourself (that's what open source software primarily is made for). If for instance you would take all the money that has to be spent from all those Queens school boards to get all those MS Office licenses needed and instead pay a programmer to keep up the PPC build from that money...and besides that it be a great help for the project too :-) And don't forget: Its Apples own system policy, not that of OOo Mac porting project, which causes most of those problems. Really no one wants to "kick out PPC support" - it's just a matter of resources. Don't complain but help us to find the resources needed. Then you will get even OOo 4.0 running under System 9 if you would need it :-) -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen Uwe Altmann OpenOffice.org auf dem Mac: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
