You know what's funny? There's a supermarket not far from me -- not
even one of the biggie chains -- and last spring they brought two
spanking new HPs to keep track of their fruits and nuts and their
gas station side. A blamed corner supermarket. Now, unless
someone's been pulling a whopper of a sly one on us, I THINK Sun's
a lot larger than a corner supermarket which can buy HPs to keep
track of fruits and nuts. Yet Sun (supposedly) can't even "afford"
to provide/donate to its PPC porters a creaky eBay set of PPC Macs
so they can crow about having a PPC Mac port to the world too.
Makes one wonder about Sun's "commitment" to the Mac! (Just how
much does Sun spend on its coffee budget anyway???)
Not depreciating anyone elses' work -- truly all you OOo engineers
get five stars -- but as the lone wolf performing a unique task no
one else is, Nakata, in my book you deserve my gold medal of
appreciation (and a HELLVA lot more from Sun), and if I could swing
it I'd throw you a fresh new PPC Mac myself! Thanks for your unsung
commitment!
With respect, I think this misses the mark.
As far as budget goes, committing engineers is far more expensive
than buying equipment, but buying for a project is not quite the same
as picking up something second-hand. Many companies *will* not allow
equipment to purchased without guarantee and support arrangements.
We're not aware of the details at Sun but Philipp Lohmann did refer
to difficulties procuring hardware. It is too be hoped, however, that
a couple of machines can be made available for the build work and QA
work.
However, the underyling problem with *future* work is the heap and
speed of changes that Apple is doing to the OS as part of the move to
Intel chips. Maho has already spoken about the problems supporting
10.3 and these will probably increase as more work is done on the
aqua version. It is ironic that the machines most likely to benefit
from an aqua version (it's to be hoped that a truely native version
will require less resources than an X11 one) may actually get to run
it but it is Apple (and Intel), a hardware company, that is
responsible for this.
Once the aqua port is complete resources should become available to
make backporting it to older versions of the OS making sure it runs
on both platforms. In the meantime it would be an incorrect use of
resources to devote them to supporting platforms which cannot be
tested during development. And that, I think, is the issue.
