Stuart, I love the Mac Mini form factor, but that particular one is definitely a G4 and was considered to be underpowered even when it first came out. Right now, for less than $600 you can get the very latest with considerably more horsepower, way better graphics, DVD burning, Snow Leopard and the latest iLife suite. It is considered to be the best value Mini Apple has ever come out with.
I would pay no more than $50 for your friend's box. At that it would make a nice print and backup server. You could attach it to your hub/router and hang printers and hard drives off of it. At about that level of expectation, you would likely not be disappointed. Expect much more and its value drops. j.
