It depends on how adept you are at setting up your own network.

For most people, leasing is probably the right thing to do because it’s plug 
and play.

But, let me remind you of the story I’ve told here several times before.

A few years ago, after a TWC upgrade, I found myself with their Arris 
modem/router/WiFi combo box. My home network is tweaked a bit more than 
average, and I spent a lot of time whipping the TWC/Arris box into shape. 
However, I soon found out whenever the box was restarted, it went back to 
default settings, forgetting all the changes I’d made.

After talking to several layers of TWC support about the problem, it turns out 
they replaced the standard Arris firmware by their own custom firmware with 
this reset “feature” baked in. They did this to avoid tech support hassles 
because they could just tell the poor confused customer to reboot the device in 
order to get it into a known state.

I replaced the Arris box with my own modem and router and have been happy ever 
since.
