I had figured that a lifetime TiVo subscription would be best

What do you get for a TiVo subscription? Is it like the TV Guide
subscription that is offered with EyeTV?

yeah, it's essentially an updated schedule of shows, and they push updates, slightly annoying ads, and occasional announcements, plus there's some sort of amalgamated streaming directory on the new models

When I first read about TiVo
etc I thought that it could record a scheduled program if the program
was delayed (like when the preceding football game lasted longer than
scheduled) rather than just recording the scheduled time slot. Can it?

it can't auto-detect overtime football games, but you can tell it to record some extra at the beginning or (useful for games) end

Is it just a license to use the device? What happens if you stop paying?

the old ones still work like a VCR, new ones don't work at all; who knows, maybe there's a hack to get something working
