but the
last sentence from your quote of the TiVo site says a multi-stream

that last paragraph is about recording multiple sources simultaneously; multi-stream is only required for that; with a single-stream cablecard, i believe you could even still record one broadcast channel simultaneously with one cable channel

If an external firewire drive works as well as the Mac Mini internal
drive(s), then perhaps I should save a little money and get the
non-server Mac Mini. I did not think I needed another CD/DVD drive,
since I already have several of those in my audio-video setup.

well, the point being it's pretty handy if you want to RIP a CD or DVD onto your Mini, or to burn DVDs of content where it is legal to do so ...

I had figured that a lifetime TiVo subscription would be best, since it
would pay for itself in about 3 years, but I did NOT realize that the
subscription died with the hardware and could not be transferred to a
new TiVo device! Thanks for that data point. That makes the lifetime
subscription much less of a no-brainer.

yeah, i would consider warranty options with the lifetime sub; otoh, i have had three TiVos in ten years; i replaced the hard drive myself on the first one after a couple of years; that one was about 8 years old when retired; the Series 2 with lifetime sub is almost 7 years old and doing fine (we have a friend with another Series 2 whose hard drive has died); since our non-lifetime unit's subscription is grandfathered in at $7/mo, it hasn't made sense for us to upgrade it to lifetime even with a discount $300 rate available to us
