Funny, info lists it for me.
You don't have, say, two dports trees sitting around, do you?

So the index *is* picking up the new universal variants but our
info command is not listing them, for some reason (and, in fact,
the index regen after Pauls's commit was *HUGE*!!!). Does 'info'
not parse the index (and somehow reach directly for the Portfiles)?
I don't remember at the moment... Now, as to whether or not we
should list & advertise these variants, I'd say no until we have
them working right out of the box for, at least, most ports
(including corner cases) and Paul's work is integrated in released
code.
