Oh wow, you're right. I guess I should have checked. I guess I made
some faulty assumptions of how portindex worked.
That said, I don't think it *should* list universal unless the port
is actually known to work with it. Any proposed solutions?

Actually, they do:
% port info apr | grep universal
apr 1.2.8, devel/apr (Variants: universal, darwin_9)
% port cat apr | grep universal
