Among all the things I would like to discuss about this thread (but not having much time at the moment to delve into them), just this small note:

Incidentally, ports will not actually list +universal as a supported variant, since PortIndex won't see it. I'm not sure if we should care

        This is strange:

-> grep universal PortIndex
(...)
variants {universal puredarwin darwin_6} depends_build port:pkgconfig portdir devel/glib2 description (...)
(...)

-> port info glib2
glib2 2.12.9, devel/glib2 (Variants: puredarwin, darwin_6)
(...)

So the index *is* picking up the new universal variants but our info command is not listing them, for some reason (and, in fact, the index regen after Pauls's commit was *HUGE*!!!). Does 'info' not parse the index (and somehow reach directly for the Portfiles)? I don't remember at the moment... Now, as to whether or not we should list & advertise these variants, I'd say no until we have them working right out of the box for, at least, most ports (including corner cases) and Paul's work is integrated in released code.

        Just my thoughts,....
