Well, not all of us in the US have that speech preference. Having worked with 
brltty in linux and in terminal on the Mac for years, admittedly mostly 
command-line as I never got much into Orca or other linux guy screenreader, I 
would rather the braille didn't just echo the speech. I frankly find it 
distracting in voiceover when I see words written out and I think maybe some of 
that is because it is following the speech. I also don't really like the fact 
that I have to have voiceover on to have braille except in terminal where I use 
brltty, even though I can of course mute the speech.
