HI Tim,

Interesting you say that, Ive just been doing that exact thing.

Turns out my fritz box had stopped working and I needed to work around the
issue so used the express and it works pretty bloody well in fact.

Hi Simon,

You could test this scenario with your Express. Use the same instructions I
suggested for the Extreme configuration. If it behaves properly, you'd then
know if it would work with the Extreme.

Hi Simon,

Yes, for sure, the Extreme can be set to Bridge mode. Setting it to Bridge
mode turns off all DHCP and NAT services so that those can be provided by your
ISP. The setting for this is under the Network pane of the Airport Utility.
The Router mode pop-up menu allows you to choose DHCP & NAT, DHCP Only or Off
(Bridge Mode). Normally, just make sure you maintain the wired connection and
give the Extreme the same SSID as your main router. This should create a
Roaming kind of configuration where your devices just connect to the closest
AP, as long as your ISP's router thing doesn't block this sort of set up.

Hi,

The Airport Extreme as opposed to the Express is a much more powerful router.
Considerably better coverage, better processor for better performance and just
an all around better unit. Of course, it's about twice the cost as the Express
though, but I'd put it up against any $50 router anytime to have it out perform
those units. The one drawback is that the Extreme cannot double as an AirPlay
device like the Express does. You could, though, turn off the broadcast
portion of the Express, connect it to the network and use the AirPlay feature
without the slow-down in network performance.

Simon, you don’t get that much more than 100 over N. You can but it’s not the
raw data rate either. Also, what’s your uplink speed to the network. You’re
in a pretty advanced part of the world I bet so it may be more than 100. Good
to clear the choke points but that might not be your biggest one.

Well, it looks from reports like many of the changes were overdue bug fixes: an
issue with DHCPv6 and Cox, and an issue with clients being separated from one
another which broke AirPlay. Not sure how it took this long, but glad it’s
done. I’m not buying Google’s product; I like the Apple solution. On the
other hand, maybe it took so long because a new one is due out soon after a
long period of disinterest by Apple. Sometimes it happens like that.
