Well, you didn't indicate if you have upgraded to the latest version of the OS. Also, have you looked to see if the problems persist when creating a temporary account or using the "guest" account on the system. This is a good way to see if the slowdowns are a system issue or a configuration issue. Note there are some websites that push so much junk around in JS that the Macintosh can't keep track of what is where. This can especially be the case for Group mode where VoiceOver has some idea of what is is played out where.
Another place you can run into trouble is Facebook if navigating bia the VoiceOver keystrokes instead of the FB recognized keys. ) Generally on sites that VoiceOver does not work well for me, I will turn off Cursor tracking and then make sure to use route functions for entering data. In fact, I think I will reassign the numbed enter key to be "route keyboard focus to voiceover cursor". This way I can quickly move focus but still keep the cursor tracking off. Though this might still have some problems with vo-shift-M or vo-space.
