As for the welcome message not being said on start up, there is a text box in your preferences for you to tell what you want voice over to say on start up. For example, I have mine set to say "Hello Kliphton, voice over ready" So I thought this was a pretty handy feature, to have it say whatever you want. I am also not experiencing the sluggishness in mail, I actually like it better than sl mail. But I also have only been using a mac for a little over a month and still have a lot to learn.
