If I'm not mistaken, control-left_arrow brings up Dashboard.  I also sometimes 
have a hard time getting out of it.  The 2 finger scrub gesture will sometimes 
work.  F12 seems to bring up Dashboard as well, and hitting that again will 
close it.  None of it seems consistent though.  :)

Once you are in Dashboard, VO-f2 twice will bring up the widget menu.
