A few points. 1. There are a couple of full disk backup utilities (Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper ) come to mind immediately. 2. I believe at least one VM version out there creates its disk images in a bundle that would allow TimeMachine to not need to copy everything for one small change. 3. THere is at least one off-site storage solution that allows one to use a friends machine for the backups.
